📣 Symbolic Withdrawal; Continued U.S. Presence in Iraq under a New Cover
🔸 On August 17, an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced that U.S. forces would withdraw from al-Asad Air Base and Baghdad International Airport in September 2025. A day later, the spokesperson of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad separately told Iraqi media that the mission of what is termed the “U.S.-led international coalition” would transition into a “more traditional bilateral security partnership” between the U.S. and Iraq.
🔸 These developments come after a long-awaited agreement reached in September 2024 between the Iraqi government and the U.S. government. Under that agreement, hundreds of coalition troops were to leave Iraq by September 2025, with the remaining forces to withdraw by the end of 2026.
🔸 Many experts and observers believe that the announcement of U.S. and coalition troop withdrawals from Baghdad and Anbar does not mean a genuine departure from Iraq, but rather the redeployment of forces within the country. Therefore, this process should not be seen as a real “withdrawal,” but as a repositioning within Iraq’s geography, with no indication of a complete exit from the country.
