What is student agency? Student agency is a learner's capacity and opportunity to act intentionally and influence learning within a real social and educational context. It can involve setting a goal, proposing a route, asking for support, explaining a decision, using feedback or revising work. Agency is not the same as unlimited choice, independence, confidence, compliance or visible participation. Teachers still protect the curriculum, access, assessment, safety and support. The useful question is not whether a learner 'has agency', but which meaningful decisions the learner can understand, access, make and review in this task.
