جملات مجهول در انگلیسی در جملات مجهول بر خلاف جملات معلوم، عملی که انجام شده اهمیت دارد و اینکه چه کسی یا چه چیزی باعث انجام کار شده است، مهم نیست و یا کمتر اهمیت دارد. بنابراین ممکن است انجام‌دهندۀ عمل ذکر نشود و یا در آخر جمله با حرف اضافه by ذکر شود. جملات مجهول را passive (یعنی گذرا) و جملات معلوم را active (یعنی فعال) می‌نامند. جمله‌های مجهول به این علت passive نامیده می‌شوند که از فاعل می‌گذریم و مفعول را مطرح می‌کنیم. جمله‌های معلوم به این علت active نامیده می‌شوند که فاعل در آنها مطرح و فعال است. مثال: I keep the butter in the fridge. (من کره را در یخچال نگه می‌دارم) جمله فوق معلوم است؛ زیرا فاعل (I) در آن مطرح شده و عمل فعل یعنی نگه‌داشتن را انجام می‌دهد. در این جمله تمرکز بر روی فاعل یعنی I است. The butter is kept in the fridge. (کره در یخچال نگه داشته می شود) این جمله مجهول است؛ زیرا فاعل در آن مطرح نشده است و مفعول (butter) اهمیت دارد. در این جمله انجام‌دهندۀ عملِ نگه‌داشتن مطرح نشده و از نظر گوینده فاقد اهمیت است. در این جمله تمرکز بر روی butter است نه کسی که آن را در یخچال نگه می‌دارد. #Grammar
