❇️ CFP: Presents and Futures of Islamic Philosophy General Description: In a world in which the humanities are increasingly marginalized, what is the importance of the study of Islamic philosophy? How might traditional texts speak to present crises and concerns? How do contemporary, new ventures within the field engage in the present moment?  How does Islamic philosophy serve not only as an object of study, but also as a living tradition and repertoire of wisdom in our contemporary age? Furthermore, how do we, as scholars of the 21st century, wield the ways in which we have been shaped by our own circumstances to grant us insights into this medieval tradition, and how might we navigate the many prejudices that color our readings? Recognizing and asserting the dynamism of Islamic philosophy, in both historical and lived forms, this conference seeks to explore its capacity to serve as a resource for thinking through and responding to modern concerns, to shape moral imagination, and to encourage innovative, embodied, or humanitarian scholarly methods. In so doing, we seek to consider and cultivate the future directions of a rapidly diversifying field. The conference is organized in conjunction with the “Islamic Philosophy in Conversation” working group, led by Dr. Nora Jacobsen Ben Hammed (UC Berkeley) and Dr. Elizabeth Sartell (Lewis University). While all paper submissions will be given equal consideration, the conference aligns itself with the goals of the working group. We therefore encourage submissions from a diverse group of applicants, especially emerging scholars of Islamic philosophy who identify as female, non-binary, or as belonging to a historically-marginalized group. Conference Structure: The conference will include two traditional panels (15-20 minutes per presenter) as well as longer sessions workshopping the papers of two emerging scholars. Additionally, we will engage in a discussion of a primary text in translation, as well as a keynote lecture, both led by Dr. Zahra Ayubi. Please note that we plan to publish the proceedings of this conference as a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal. All participants should be open to submitting their papers as part of this issue. Participants should therefore present work that is in-progress rather than already published. Logistics: The conference will be held at the University of California, Berkeley on Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4, 2025. Funding: The conference will fund round-trip economy travel for all presenters to Berkeley, CA. The conference will also provide lodging for graduate student and non-tenure track faculty presenters. Tenured and tenure-track faculty without access to institutional funding may request lodging as well; requests will be evaluated based on need and availability. Applying: To apply, email your C.V. as well as a title and abstract of 500-750 words to FalsafaInConversation@gmail.com by October 1, 2024. Additionally, kindly indicate if you prefer to present on a traditional panel (15-20 minute presentation) or to workshop your paper. Participants will be notified of their acceptance in November 2024.

Call for Abstracts Islamic studies refers to the academic study of Islam and Muslims and as such has become an independent academic discipline. In an academic study of Islam, Islam is understood as a religion connected to the idea of belief system or belief about abstract things that shapes human behaviour known as religious action. In this conceptualisation of Islam as a religion it is acknowledged that Islam contributes significantly to shaping the behaviours of Muslims in society. People from different religious and ideological backgrounds and Muslims themselves seek to study Islam which is interpreted and practised by its followers in a variety of ways in order to gain a better understanding and even appreciation of this important world religion that shares its tradition in a fundamental way with Christianity and Judaism. Understanding this aspect of Islam takes scholars and students to examining the pattern of Muslim everyday living particularly through higher learning and academic analysis making Islamic studies an investigation of both Islam and its adherents. To this end, this conference seeks to examine Islam and its adherents in detail in an attempt to provide deep and comprehensive explanation of Islam as a lived tradition and Muslims as a diverse and forever growing community. Those who study Islam and Muslims often do so from different disciplinary or theoretical perspectives making Islamic studies a multidisciplinary academic program. Under Islamic studies scholars and students examine a wide range of topics including pre-Islamic milieu commonly called the period of jahiliyyah, Islamic civilization, Islamic history and historiography, shari’ah (Islamic law) and fiqh (jurisprudence), kalam (Islamic theology), Sufism (mysticism), Arabic, Islamic philosophy, Islamic scriptures (Qur’an and Hadiths), and tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis). Many contemporary scholars and students who work in the area of Islamic studies have adopted analytical tools and methods in their investigative endeavours usually used in humanities such as philosophy and social sciences such as anthropology and sociology. The 3rd Postgraduate Islamic Studies International Conference seeks to examine the inner complexities of Islam as a complete way of life and its variety of rituals, practices, and teachings embedded in the pattern of Muslim everyday living using modern academic tools, scientific research methods, and theoretical frameworks. It is designed to foster and disseminate ongoing and new research about Islam and Muslims in national and international contexts. The terms “Islam” and “Muslim” are defined broadly. By “Islam” we mean prescription of a way of life however differently interpreted originating from Islamic scriptures – Qur’an and Hadiths. By “Muslim” we mean any Muslim individuals, institutions, communities, and societies who subscribe to Islam. We seek to draw paper proposals by student researchers from across fields and disciplines (e.g., Islamic studies, Middle East studies, Islamic education, history, political science, public affairs, international relations, anthropology, and sociology) in formal and non-formal, governmental and non-governmental, community, and academic sectors. 👇👇👇
👆👆👆 Key themes of the conference include: Jahiliyyah Muslim Empires Origins and Development of Islamic Civilisation Qur’an and Hadith Shari’ah Fiqh Islamic Education Islamic Psychology Women in Islam Sufism Muslim Migration Islam in the West Islam and the Media A 300-word paper proposal is due no later than Monday 9th October, 2024. A review team will use the following criteria in their proposal review: relevance of the topic to the Conference; theory/context clearly articulated; methodology and methods of inquiry explained; findings identified, and contribution to the field or discipline clearly explained. Accepted paper proposals will be notified by Monday 1st November, 2024. A panel of reviewers for conference paper presentations will be set up who will choose a set of best papers at the December 2024 Conference.  Individuals whose papers will be chosen by the panel will be expected to ready their papers into publishable manuscripts for a Q1 journal which will be announced later. @studiesofshia ❇️ استادیار علوم دینی Assistant Professor of Religious Studies 🔹کالج بیتس، لویستون، مین، آمریکا Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, USA 🔸تاریخ شروع: آگوست 2025 🔸مهلت درخواست: 8 اکتبر 2024 Starting Date: August 2025 Application Deadline: October 8, 2024 More information مرجع تخصصی @studiesofshia
Bates Department of Religious Studies seeks an assistant professor in Islamic Studies for a tenure-track position beginning in August 2025. Area of specialization is open. We envision a colleague who can contribute to the study of Islam in both local and global contexts and to Bates’ collective goals as reflected in the new “race, power, privilege, and colonialism” general education requirement. Given the interdisciplinary nature of Religious Studies, candidates are invited to think expansively and to share their thoughts about how their Religious Studies courses will contribute to Bates’ broader liberal arts curriculum, through, for example, the cross-listing of their courses with other academic units in the social sciences, humanities, and/or interdisciplinary studies. Bates students come from a diversity of educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, and we are committed to each student’s success. Thus, candidates may choose to share evidence of their skills and experience supporting a diverse student body. We seek a colleague who is committed to sustaining a strong and inclusive community of learning in our related fields. We encourage applications from individuals from historically marginalized groups and from those who may have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education due to societal, economic, or academic circumstances. Applicants may choose to describe the breadth of their teaching repertoire, including, for example, how they have worked with, or plan to work with, historically underrepresented, first-generation, and marginalized student populations. Bates College is a residential liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine—a diverse and growing community roughly 45 minutes from the state’s largest city, 2 ½ hours north of Boston, and 4 ½ hours south of Montreal. Faculty scholarship and creative work at Bates are robustly supported by start-up packages, internal grants, and a well-staffed external grants office. Community-engaged learning and study abroad are both broadly encouraged and supported; pedagogical development and innovation is further buttressed by a new Center of Inclusive Teaching and Learning. Educational access and racial justice are central to Bates’ history and mission and our faculty-led initiatives reflect this commitment. Ph.D. preferred; advanced ABD considered. For full consideration, applications should be received by October 8, 2024 and should include the following: > a cover letter (including an overview of research and classroom experience); > a CV (including contact information for three referees); and > a statement on pedagogical philosophy that describes how the applicant meets Bates’ standards of excellence in terms of inclusive and evidence-based pedagogy. > Sample syllabi and brief (5000-20,000-word) writing samples are also welcome. The search committee will request letters of recommendation from three referees for short-listed candidates. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and verification of degree. APPLY HERE مرجع تخصصی @studiesofshia
